Her father was a dentist who taught his children tothink of the needs of others. So, in high school Mary helped at an orphanage, caring for children withdisabilities. Later, she joined the U.S. Navy and provided aid as a Registered Nurse.<\/p><p>Today, she is a philanthropist and a tenured volunteer leader at Hope Services, having served ten years as a Board Member and another twenty in philanthropic and advisory roles. She first connected with Hope over 30 years ago when her daughter, Laura, was diagnosed with William\u2019s Syndrome.<\/p><p>\u201cIt had an impact on all of us,\u201d Mary recalled. \u201cThen, I thought \u2018how can I move on here, and move forward as a parent.\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/div><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Laura now lives in her own home with her dog and her caregiver of 14 years. A few days per week, she attends a community-based program at Hope offering her recreational and volunteer activities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u201cI\u2019m so lucky to be in this program,\u201d Laura said. \u201cIt means so much to me, because they\u2019re very nice people and I can be out in the community a lot of the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10011\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hopeservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/portraits-9-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hopeservices.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/portraits-9-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/hopeservices.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/portraits-9-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hopeservices.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/portraits-9-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/hopeservices.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/portraits-9-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Mary explains that while Laura has a place at Hope Services, there\u2019s still much to be done in society. Laura isn\u2019t so much bothered by public stares. But, a close friend of hers is hurt more deeply by it. \u201cWe talk about this within our family,\u201d Mary said.<\/span><\/p><p>Throughout Laura\u2019s life, Mary has worked to impart the same values of service instilled by her own upbringing, teaching Laura that there are individuals who are in wheelchairs, others that cannot see, hear, or speak.<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Laura, herself, has embodied service, despite her own disability. She once served as a volunteer at Camp Harmon\u2019s week-long program for those with physical disabilities. Throughout the entire week, she pushed those wheelchairs and helped them try new activities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u201cWe try to do our part, and lesson the discrimination, period,\u201d Mary stated. \u201cThat\u2019s what we focus on.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">Developing society\u2019s acceptance of people with disabilities is a critical, but challenging mission, according to Mary. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u201cI can\u2019t impart my really deep emotional feelings around the incredible value of a family member with special needs,\u201d she shared. \u201cThe general population cannot feel that.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\"> She affirms that this is why Hope exists; that the solution is not simple, nor quickly achieved. It requires a community of allies committed to doing their part. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight );\">\u201cGiving to Hope is one way I do that,\u201d Mary shared. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Mary Schell, service has long been a way of life.
