It uniquely combines media training and employment to improve the quality of clients\u2019 lives. Education, volunteer activities, and paid work enable them to become valuable members of the community. Let\u2019s meet some of the current participants.<\/p>\n<h2>Jordan K.<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8194 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hopeservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jordan-pic-fix-newletter-200px.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan K.\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><em>\u201cHope has helped me overcome challenges and obstacles to help me achieve a pathway to stardom!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jordan K. was born in San Jose 24 years ago. Diagnosed with autism, he came to EMCC Whittier from a post-secondary program at San Jose Community College. Hope\u2019s biweekly counseling sessions helped him gain part-time employment. He\u2019s worked at our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hope-thrift.org\/locations\/fremont\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HopeTHRIFT store in Fremont<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, doing recovery and putting out new merchandise onto the sales floor. He\u2019s worked as a backroom associate at TJ Maxx in Santa Clara, unwrapping new items, hanging them, adding security tags, and otherwise prepping them for the sales floor. These days he works at the Home Depot in Cupertino as a garden associate: watering, sweeping, \u201cgo backs,\u201d recovery, and customer service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8196\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8196\" class=\"wp-image-8196 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hopeservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/jordan-k-765px-wide.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan K. at work\" width=\"765\" height=\"543\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jordan K. at work<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jordan also participates in the EMCC writer\u2019s club. Each student chooses a topic such as poetry, short stories, or a gameshow. Jordan chose to create his own YouTube channel. It\u2019s anonymous, just recordings of his voice. He discusses different topics that interest him, and reviews products and movies. He is very knowledgeable about action figures, and paints them as a hobby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cJordan has been a pleasure to have at the Whittier program. He is a great peer to his friends and a very dependable and hard worker.\u201d<\/em> \u2013Tiffany Swinfard<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert F.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8197 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hopeservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Albert-F.-200px.jpg\" alt=\"Albert F.\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe program has always been good for me. Even when I think I am not learning new stuff, I am.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert F. is 31 and lives in a group home in Watsonville. His diagnosis is intellectual disability and seizure disorder. He was referred to Hope by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Andreas Regional Center because of EMCC\u2019s unique program design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Hope he explored different employment opportunities via job development classes and learning experiences. Those included working on the leaf crew and having a mailer job at Center Water. Along with Phillip T. (see below), he\u2019s now a regular on the UC Santa Cruz food service crew at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crown Merrill Dining Hall, bussing tables and washing dishes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He really enjoys his job, and makes $15\/hour.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8198\" style=\"width: 775px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8198\" class=\"wp-image-8198 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hopeservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Albert-and-Phillip-on-the-line.jpg\" alt=\"Albert F. and Phillip T. on the line\" width=\"765\" height=\"576\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Albert F. and Phillip T. on the line<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He enjoys taking photographs and writing poems. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the future, he <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hopes to work in a retail store and have a place of his own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cAlbert has always had a lot of potential and it was important for him that we find the right work match that sparked his interests, UCSC seems to be the right place for him.\u201d<\/em> \u2013Sheryl Hagemann, Program Manager\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phillip T.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8199 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hopeservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Phillip-T.-200px.jpg\" alt=\"Phillip T.\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/>Phillip is 27 years old. He lives in Santa Cruz with his mom and grandparents. He has been diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder and seizure disorder, but otherwise is in good health. After completing high school in 2014, Phillip and his mom toured programs and decided that Hope would be the best option for him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our EMCC program helped Phillip explore options. He\u2019s a really social guy who loves being active and \u201cin the know.\u201d His goal for 2019 was to find a job, and Hope\u2019s team matched him with jobs that were a good fit. He now works three days a week at the Crown Merrill Dining Hall at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UC Santa Cruz<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bussing tables and washing dishes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He makes $15\/hour and is considering going full time. He also volunteers at the SPCA and the local library.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phillip\u2019s mom is so proud and delighted with his progress and his job that she once brought flowers for our Program Manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Valadez<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8200 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hopeservices.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aaron-Valadez.jpg\" alt=\"Aaron Valadez\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWorking here at Hope has given me the opportunity to support and provide care for individuals with disabilities. I chose to work at Hope Services because there is no greater feeling than helping others. I enjoy helping our clients become more independent and making a difference in my community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Valadez started at Hope in July 2018 as a floater Job Coach, and is now a Community Support Facilitator. He\u2019s a perfect fit for EMCC because he embraces the media components of the program and pitches in when needed. He\u2019s always willing to try out new ideas and brings joy and fun into everything he does. His clients and coworkers love his flexibility and enthusiasm!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How You Can Help<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, the lives of thousands of people like Jordan, Albert, and Phillip are helped by Hope Services employees like Aaron.
